Bonding Moments....

Mentors- In Focus

I read this story the other day and it oddly enough goes along very well with this topic so i thought Id share it:

"Its a bug, Its a bug!" This was my last conscious thought before i nearly died of embarrassment. Kim, our intern in high school ministry, wanted to introduce me to Craig Henderson after church. There I was standing next to the girl I admired most in the world and she was introducing me to this gorgeous guy. I smiled my biggest smile, and a giant mosquito darted in and caught my lip gloss. I'm not kidding, Kim started jumping up and down trying to swat it off of me. Meanwhile, I was dying and Craig was just staring at me.. I could tell by the expression on his face he was thinking "You are one strange girl".

Kim and I still laugh about it. It was kind of a bonding moment for her and me. I'm in her small group at church, and recently she has been taking me out for coffee once a week. We talk about my life, my friends and my problems. She really seems like she is interested-- even though shes 5 years older and in college.

She always asks how she can pray for me. I feel like I can tell her anything, and she gives me good advice. She has been there and done that when it comes to all the typical high school stuff. "I'm not expert", She says, but just having somebody to listen to me that knows what I'm going through makes a difference.

I guess you could think of her as my "mentor"... She's more like a really good friend to me.

When I read this story it got me thinking... do I have a mentor? What really is a mentor? I don't think I have a mentor... I have more "role model" types of people in my life that I look up to.. Mentor sounds so... uninviting like, when I think of a mentor I think of a person thats about to teach me how to do some kind of job. May they be young adults in my church, family members, teachers, and even some of my friends I have many role models. I am a very to my self kind of person... and there is maybe a SMALL handful of people who I trust and look to for advice, I need to be more open- I should probably work on that.. but, I guess you could say I'd MUCH rather listen than be listened too.

>>What are advantages of having a role model/"mentor"?
- Mentors show you how to "do" life by sharing their expeices when it comes to things like dating, spirituality, and friendship.
-You can hang out with your mentor, eat lunch together, work out together, etc. The important thing is talking and spending time together.
- Even though friends will be there for you throughout things you go through it is alot better to have someone who you can talk to that has already been through whatever your going through. I find that advice from people that know what your going through helps alot more than those who dont.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF BEING A ROLE MODEL?
- Do you remember when you were in high school/junior high and were going through hard times? It is HUMAN NATURE to learn by example... Having a mentor can really help your growth (spiritually)... wouldnt you want to say that you were apart of helping somebody that was in need?
-I LOVE helping the junior high youth at my church... i dont exactly know how it happened... but somehow i guess word got around i was a very good listener and i guess you could say i have made quite a few friends... ;) It makes me feel soooo good that they trust me enough to tell me there problems and look to me for advice!

What does the Bible say about mentors?
-The apostale Paul mentored Timothy and loved him like his own son... Check out 2 Timothy 1:13-14 to check out how close there relationship actually was....

Well... I think that is all for now :)

a new chapter....

About a month ago I was asked the question "What have you done to influence/impact a life of another human being? If your answer is nothing... What are you going to do?" We went around the room saying like what we would do.. everybodys answers were things like "Go to Africa as a missionary" or "Raise a million dollars for some cause"... I sat there and was really thinking hard about the question... and when they got to me I simply said, "I don't know yet...can I get back to you on that?" So although the answers about being missionaries or raseing "x" amount of money are great... I wanted to think realistic. I have been in prayer about what to do... and then I thought of this.

I have always wanted to start a blog... I just didn't know what to write about every time I sat down to make one (My life... truly isn't very interesting) ;) - So I came up with this idea..

I got to thinking about how I was going to reach so many people... I thought about what I did every day and I literally probably spend 6 hours on the computer a day (I have 2 full blocks at school that I spend on a computer) I'm going to post a blog at least once a week with a topic that has been on my heart... It will kind of be like a daily devotion.. instead, a weekly devotion. It will be a good read, I promise. I am very opinionated and I do give really good advice.

I dream of one day being a writer... its always kind of been a talent of mine... so this is kind of a joy for me to get to do :)

If I can touch ONE single persons life with this thing whether they be in junior high, a young adult, or an adult, I would be pleased. Just share this with your friends because I have high hopes for this blog :)
